The second BMW M motorcycle is a chopper. There is even an American-style touring machine… – Car-Motor

Until now, the letter M denoted the sports variants of BMW’s four-wheeled models, but today it also includes two-wheeled vehicles. The LowRide editorial team was driven by the following source of inspiration during the BMW R 18 M project: the idea was to give the BMW Cruiser a more streamlined and sporty look – avoiding exaggeration – without forgetting to refer to the retro character of the BMW R 18.

“The stability, long wheelbase and jump-ready nature of the 1,800cc big boxer encourages a lightning-fast start, so in our opinion, it rightly got a sporty and retro look. In the design of the R 18 M, we find inspiration from BMW Motorrad’s heritage and inspiration from four-wheelers: the M clearly refers to motorsport, ”said Giuseppe Roncen, Director of LowRide and a great expert on the BMW R 18 M project.
The work focused on the chassis, suspension adjustment, body and accessories, leaving the mechanics and electronics unchanged as the natural strength of the R 18. Thanks to its lower weight and changed seating position, the BMW R 18 M promises even more enjoyable riding: “We look forward to experiencing its potential. The significantly lighter motorcycle only needs to be easier to handle thanks to its more compact and forward-facing seating position without exaggeration. ”

The R 18 M project was made possible by BMW Italia and was born out of the emotions that this engine can evoke: a fun cruiser that is strong and vibrant, with a big heart and endless torque. LowRide involved some of the best of Italian craftsmen and companies specializing in the industry. The sketches were commissioned by designer Oberdan Bezzi, a former LowRide partner. He managed to create an exciting power cruiser without compromising the essence of the BMW R 18. American Dreams did the assembly and coordinated the work; Elaboratorio, which specializes in prototyping and modeling, created the new saddle end, covers and fiberglass wind deflector from scratch. Carbon Italy was responsible for the carbon fiber details. The ER Exhaust Revolution is signed by the short exhaust pipe, which is designed to make the engine more concise and allow a greater angle of inclination. The short exhaust pipes also provide a better view of the gorgeous, bare, nickel-plated PTO shaft, an original detail that deserves emphasis. LR Leather is the leather-covered saddle, while the polish was made by Dox Art Factory. Rizoma has provided mirrors, grips and unique turn signals that perfectly match the character of the motorcycle.

The Garage 221’s determination to build a unique motorcycle based on the BMW R 18 was made at its presentation at the 2019 EICMA show. The innovative yet traditional design of the new BMW cruiser “cried out for matching accessories and even more Heritage spirituality, from the soft design of the tank to the distinctive shape of the boxer,” said Pier Francesco Marchio of Garage 221.

The project initially focused on studying different parts of the motorcycle, keeping in mind the need to combine the new elements into a unique harmony of lines – drawing inspiration from the cruisers of the 1970s, which have always particularly appealed to Pier Francesco for their “impressive aesthetic flexibility”. The distinctive features of the BMW R 18 Aurora, made by the Garage 221, are truncated, wrapped-around mufflers at the rear wheel and a spacious “batwing” cover element similar to a “bat wing” that places a special emphasis on the front tract of the motorcycle.

The modifications leading to the R 18 Aurora are based on the Garage 221’s experience in the world of BMW, and in fact all the components used come from other BMW Motorrad models. The saddle is derived from a 2005 BMW 1200 C, the Batwing is made using the front trim of a 1982 BMW R 100 and the rear of a 1991 BMW K 75. Even the body color was based on the color code of a 1983 BMW RT 100, tailoring the graphics to its hue and intensity. The front and rear fender mounts, saddle mounts and license plate frame are entirely handmade.

The exhaust pipes were made in collaboration with Leo Vince, taking special care of the sound to make it even more full-bodied and immersive. During their design, special care was taken to give the R 18 a very unique and radiant character. The R 18 Aurora oil cooler grille creates an elegant, natural look inspired by the grille on BMW 1960s cars. “It was a lot of work,” said Pier Francesco, “but the result is truly impressive. The painting of the cylinder head and injection covers, the central crankcase and the oil cooler in the same pattern combines the concept, providing a completely unique combination with the cylinder block and bevel gear. ”
