The members of the public expedition visited the northernmost of the nuclear power plants – the floating nuclear power plant (FNPP) in Pevek, Chukotka. They found out how the work of the station affects the ecological situation in the region, reported on the site of the urban district of Pevek.
The measurements were carried out in the presence of more than two dozen journalists from Germany, England, USA, Austria and France. The check showed that the background radiation in the area of the floating nuclear power plant is completely formed by natural sources.
– It was concluded that the operation of the station does not make any negative contribution to the change in the radioecological situation in the region, – commented the head of the expedition, leading researcher at the Institute of Industrial Ecology of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences Alexei Yekidin.
The experts spoke about the results of their research during a videoconference, in which local authorities and representatives of the Public Organization for Control, Information and Regional Development of Hungary (TEIT) and the Paks NPP of Hungary took part. The head of the municipality, Ivan Leushkin, noted that such expeditions are very important. Residents of the region and the public must be informed about the safety of nuclear power plants.
And according to the director of the floating nuclear power plant Kirill Toropov, the station has established itself as a reliable innovative source of heat and electricity, to which all power grids of the region are transferred.
The floating nuclear power plant is a unique project that has no analogues in the world, started operating in 2020. The power plant consists of the Akademik Lomonosov floating power unit (FPU) and onshore infrastructure. It is based in the port of Pevek in Chukotka and is used to supply power to the region.
