The pandemic has not only made its effects felt on the production and sale of cars, but also on testing and verification. In 2020, the independent European security body, EuroNCAP, managed to complete less than a dozen comprehensive tests, which made it impossible to draw up the usual rankings by category, replaced by a single ranking.

This is a list rather than a real ranking, because the cars tested belong to different segments and categories that are not directly comparable (we go from compacts to SUVs and pick-ups, with a good percentage of electric and hybrid).

The rules evolve “on the run”

To this we must add that the evaluation method of the European body is constantly evolving, obtaining the stars takes into account a complicated count that does not only represent the average of the scores obtained in the four evaluation areas which are protection for adults and children. , pedestrians and safety equipment. Therefore, with the same number of stars obtained, we can find cars with very different results.

In particular, last autumn the evaluation parameters of ADAS, the active assistance systems, whose role is becoming increasingly important and which are subject to continuous regulatory and technical evolution, were reviewed. Therefore, the latest batch of tests of 2020 has already used different criteria than the previous sessions.
