The power over the Internet is crucial in terms of public control, propaganda, the flow of important information and state security. The Kremlin cannot afford a situation in which new technologies will allow citizens to easily bypass the monitoring of government bodies and exchange information that poses a threat to the oligarchs.
It turns out that the Russian State Duma has even a ready plan for the development of the global Starlink Internet from Elon Musk or OneWeb, as well as other similar systems of communication with the world via satellites, which will be gaining popularity in the coming years.
Putin and company intend to severely punish any rebellious individuals who try to smuggle Starlink / OneWeb into the country and use it freely, or allow large groups of people to do so. Fines are to range from PLN 500 to PLN 1,500 for ordinary users and as much as PLN 25 to 75 million for companies. The authorities also intend to impose higher penalties for recidivists, including imprisonment.
Interestingly, despite the Kremlin’s ban on the use of the space Internet, the country not only helps launch the OneWeb satellite constellations with its Soyuz, it will also build its own constellation in the next 4 years. It may seem like a strange step, but as they say, the money has to match and the propaganda echoes.
The authorities want to ensure that citizens can connect to the global network even in the farthest reaches of the country, where there is no telecommunications infrastructure and will not be available soon, but at the same time they want to have full control over the flow of information, as it has been so far.
