The richest countries spend 30 times more on armaments than on climate protection

It’s chilling how much more the richest countries spend on armaments.

Devastating statistics were published by the Transnational Institute (TNI) international research institute whose objective is to create a more democratic and sustainable world – writes a Euronews. According to the information of the news channel, the TNI from its latest report it turns out that the world’s most powerful countries spend 30 times more money on arming their armies than on preventing the climate crisis.

During the research, the period between 2013-2021 was analyzed, and the comparison revealed that the 23 richest countries in the world, which are also considered the biggest polluters, spent more than 9 trillion (nine thousand billion) euros on their armies, while during the same period they spent only 235 billion euros on the for climate change preparation and prevention – moreover, it is worth looking at all this in the light of the fact that part of the latter amount was used to support the countries most affected by the climate crisis.

The experts of the research institute in Amsterdam also pointed out that since 2013, military expenditures have increased by more than 21 percent.

Every dollar spent on the military increases greenhouse gas emissions while diverting financial resources, skills, and attention away from the greatest existential threat humanity has ever faced.

– warn TNI researchers in their report.

The research also points out that the countries that spend the most on armaments – including, for example, Great Britain and France – are also the biggest emitters of greenhouse gases that aggravate climate change.

The TNI report warns that such emissions have increased significantly since Russia attacked Ukraine in February this year. As a result of Russian aggression, Germany announced in June that it would spend 100 billion euros on armaments, while the Norwegian government, traditionally a leader in climate matters, suspended its climate crisis-related spending while the war in Ukraine continues.

The publication of the report was timed for the COP27 climate summit taking place in Egypt, because, as the TNI representative put it: “Egypt is better known for its military spending than its actions on climate change”. The research institute pointed out that between 2017 and 2021, Egypt was among the five largest arms importers in the world: the source of their purchases was mainly Russia, France and Italy.

When faced with climate change and the signs of extremely dangerous tipping points, it is our overriding duty to consider curbing climate change and developing international cooperation as the primary goal in order to protect the most affected groups of people. Nevertheless, in 2022 we will see an arms race again, which will only increase the negative effects of climate change and prevent their mitigation

– TNI experts wrote in their report.
