“ITIA confirms that an independent tribunal has suspended the player Simona Halep for a period of four years, following violations of the Anti-Doping Regulations in Tennis (TADP).

Two-time Grand Slam champion Halep was charged with two separate violations of the rules. The first related to the banned substance roxadustat, at the US Open 2022, discovered following a urine sample during the competition. The second related to irregularities related to the biological passport.

The independent tribunal, set up by Sport Resolutions, heard experts on June 28 and 29 in London from both Halep and the ITIA, with the player also giving evidence to jurors directly as part of the proceedings.

On 11 September 2023, the tribunal confirmed that it had found that the player had intentionally committed a violation of the Anti-Doping Rules in Tennis, Article 2:

The biological passport charge was also upheld, as the tribunal said there was no reason to doubt the strong unanimous opinion of three experts that the explanation for the irregularities in the passport was “probably doping”.

The tribunal accepted Halep’s argument that she had ingested a contaminated supplement, but concluded that the amount ingested was not found in the urine sample.the release states.
