The Red Cross of the Baix Llobregat Nord has once again made sure that no child runs out of toys on Twelfth Night. The volunteers of the solidarity institution have managed to collect 680 new toys, thanks to the collaboration of organizations, companies and individuals, who have distributed to 227 children in our region. The health situation has made it difficult to organize massive fundraising activities, but even so, the reference technique of the Lower North Red Cross, Griselda Sanahuja, says that they have achieved the goal more than that and that all children in situation vulnerable have been able to enjoy the most magical date on the calendar. Sanitary restrictions have, however, prevented the delivery to the children of the inmates of the Can Brians Penitentiary Center.
How did you deploy this year’s toy campaign?
We are very happy because we have been able to reach, as every year, all the boys and girls who needed to have toys on the day of Kings, so we have achieved the ultimate goal. It is a campaign that we considered a little different from other years, due to the restrictions of the COVID-19, and we had to advance it to avoid municipal confinements. We didn’t want any kids to run out of toys. All the families we serve throughout the year are the ones who end up receiving toys for their children. In Martorell we bring together the bulk of toys that we distribute throughout the region.
How many toys did you hand out?
We distributed 680 toys to 227 children. For us it is a good result, although they are less toys than other editions, but this year we could not make the delivery of toys to the children of the inmates of the penitentiaries, due to the pandemic situation. Security measures made it difficult for us to carry it out.
How did you collect all this material?
We have collected toys in specialized stores and also thanks to different companies and entities that have sent them to us. This year we have had fewer collaborations because we have not been able to carry out the solidarity activities of other years. On the other hand, the good news is that all the toys collected have been new. Everyone has come to understand that boys and girls have the right to play with a new toy. We always insist that it is not warlike or sexist. We have received many cooperative board games, i.e. where all members have to play together for a common goal, also puzzles, jump ropes and balls.
The Kings received the gifts and distributed them on January 6th.
As every year, we work to help the Three Kings. Our task is to get these toys so that Melcior, Gaspar and Baltasar go to all the children’s homes in the Baix Llobregat Nord and all the children have their gift on the 6th of January.
Is it one of the most appreciated campaigns?
The truth is that it is one of the largest, one that moves more volunteers and more enthusiasm. She is very grateful because toys are not a basic necessity like food, hygiene or the payment of supplies, but within the Decalogue of the Rights of the Child there is the right to play and for them it is fundamental. You know that all the boys and girls, with whom we work collaterally all year round, end up having their game. When they return to school they can also explain what the Kings have brought them and what they have played during the Christmas holidays.
