The popularity of telecommuting has risen like a rocket – Still, only a small percentage of employers advertise telecommuting

Opportunities for telework and interest in telework have grown a lot. According to Duunitor, the job search service, the number of telework advertisements increased by 89 per cent last year compared to the previous year.

According to Duunitor’s press release, about 34,000 job advertisements were published on the duunitori.fi website in 2021, informing about the possibility of teleworking. In 2020, the corresponding figure was about 18,000.

In terms of numbers, the largest number of teleworking opportunities was in sales and trade. In 2020 and 2021, 5,572 notices of teleworking were published in these sectors, representing about 10% of all notifications in the sector.

In relation to the number of notifications, the highest number of telework was in the financial administration and banking sector: 27% of the notifications in the sector mentioned the possibility of telework.

Teleworking was also plentiful for consultants, in the legal, IT and human resources sectors. In these areas, telework was mentioned in about one-fifth of all vacancies.

Telework has attracted jobseekers even before the interest rate crisis, but based on Duunitor’s visitor data, interest has grown significantly. In 2021, a total of approximately 1,240,000 telework jobs were applied for on the Duunitori.fi website. This represented an increase of 85% by 2020, when the same figure was 670,000.

Telework divides the labor market into three groups

Duunitor’s leading employer image consultant Lauri Vaisto outlines the telework debate by dividing the labor market into three groups according to tasks:

1.Work tasks that are not meaningful or possible to do remotely. For example, almost entirely industrial production and healthcare, as well as a significant part of the service sector, such as tourism and restaurant workers.

2. Work that is accustomed to be done at least part of the time, even before the corona pandemic. For example, work in foreign trade and business sales, as well as tasks in the IT sector.

3. Tasks in which it has not been possible or desired to organize the performance of work independently, even if it has been possible.

“Roughly speaking, the first two groups together represent about two-thirds of all work assignments. The third group’s transition to teleworking again dominated the public debate in the first interest rate spring of 2020, ”Vaisto says in a press release.

He thinks telecommuting had come to stay even before the pandemic. The exclusionary measures of society only accelerated the adoption of the way of working in new areas.
