THE PEOPLE ARE OUTRAGED! The philological high school humiliates the south of Serbia

The Philological Gymnasium in Belgrade, with its project, which should be a source of pride and honor for our country, humiliated the Serbian people who live and were born in the area of southern Serbia. Namely, it is a disputable fact that this high school, which has a great reputation, acted in this way. On the Instagram account “digitalni.bukvar”, which, as it was confirmed to us in the high school itself, the project of this high school literally reads: “Do you have trouble with cases like people from the south of Serbia?”.

After this shameful announcement yesterday, this announcement started to be shared on Twitter and provoked a mountain of comments, and everyone comes down to one thing: this is a humiliation of the people from the south of Serbia, and this is a disgrace and shame.

We do not know whether the intention of this announcement was supposed to be a joke or not, or whether it was inspired by the media to attract attention, but what is certain is that it is inadmissible for an educational institution of this reputation to allow itself this.

“The southern railway is used to being slapped”, “the people from the south did not deserve this”, “shame and disgrace”, Turkish beys would still be sitting on Zeleni venac, near Filološka, if there were no people from southern Serbia “,” the southern railway is good only while giving sons for wars “, are just some of the comments on social networks which also ask to delete the disputed announcement and send a public apology.

Let us remind you that linguists insist on the fact that no form of speech is in itself more valuable than another and that any interpersonal communication, official or unofficial, public or private, must be tolerant, and that dialect, like language, is a feature of collective identity.

For our portal, this situation was additionally explained by the professor of Serbian language and literature, Aleksandra Srećković.

– The Serbian language abounds in a wealth of dialects that have developed their specifics during the historical development of the language itself. Therefore, it could be considered a kind of desecration of the language to deny the importance of the use of dialectal specifics in relation to the literary language which is normative. By rejecting the so-called dialects. non-literary language, not only to completely destroy the structure of the language, but also to reject valuable literary works that contain local speech – says Sreckovic.

She also explains that linguists from the Department of Serbian Studies have no doubts when it comes to the importance of dialects, however, in our society there are structures that, out of completely non-linguistic motives, which we can classify as elitism, create unnecessary divisions between different linguistic terms and their speakers.

– By the way, we should consider how much the linguistic purists themselves are, even though they belong to the so-called dialect. standard language. Also, in support of this, it should be emphasized that the educational system is uniform as far as language is concerned, and children on the territory of the entire state receive education within the norm of their mother tongue. Therefore, it is inappropriate for someone to blame the lack of language literacy if they use the dialect of their area. And it is especially inadmissible for the more than relevant institution when it comes to language, the Belgrade Philological High School – concludes Professor Aleksandra Srećković.
