The Outfit (2022) – The Movie Reviews

The Outfit is an American crime thriller signed by Graham Moore in his feature debut in collaboration with Jonathan McLain. The film premiered in February at the 72nd Berlin Film Festival when the rights were bought by Focus Features, which released it in cinemas on March 18.

The plot of the film is set on a cold and snowy night in the 1950s in a men’s clothing store located in a neighborhood outside downtown Chicago and run by tailor Lenard (Mark Rajlans). He opened the store after spending a lot of time as an apprentice and craftsman in prestigious London bars, and his clientele consists mainly of local mobsters. The plot starts when one of the gangsters is shot by members of a rival gang and comes to Lenard’s shop to wait for further instructions, but also to finally listen to a tape exposing an informant in his organization…

The introductory editing of the film is part of a narrative maneuver that introduces us in a short time to the quiet and focused Leonard, his secretary Mabel, and the routine of men entering a store with certain demands. Some of them completely ignore the workers and put envelopes in a special box in Lenard’s workspace while guns can be seen under their coats. Through the narrative, Lenard narrates his process of designing, measuring, tailoring and assembling suits, and we understand that he is worried that Mabel got into a romance with the gangster who is in charge of that box.

As a rule, movies that have twists do not have to be great, on the contrary – if there is no basis other than the idea of surprise, the whole story can become repetitive, predictable or meaningless. The Outfit it does not have a particularly deep basis for its twisted story of betrayal, but it is definitely made solid by a group of convincing characters whose personalities, desires and motives guide every decision made in this story. In other words, nothing here seems imaginary or imposed because at the end of the film we understand who made what choice and why every decision was made.

Simply put, this film follows obviously or secretly strong people who intrigue, cover up and abruptly improvise their ways through other schemes, cover-ups or impulsive actions. Although the script relies on twists and details of uncertainty that suggest doom, there is a sense of inevitability for every move of our characters. The reason everything had to happen this way is that these particular people are the only reason why it all happens – their different relationships have influenced their actions, and they are smart enough to realize that their goals conflict with the goals of other characters. .

Lenard knows everything about the gangster organization and their internal conflicts. For example, he is aware that the boss’s son is jealous of an ambitious assistant whose plans for his future career are contrary to the established hierarchy. He uses his knowledge to manipulate these people so as not to get into trouble, and later we learn that he does it for some of his own purposes.

The whole film takes place in the plot itself, and the claustrophobic feeling that the walls are slowly closing in front of these characters creates a constant fear of a violent culmination of the conflict. For that purpose, the director cleverly uses large shots and economical lighting. Mark Rylance is a quality actor who provides calm, thoughtful and actively attentive work that is characteristic of him in every project – behind his acting there is always a hint about the background of the character that is enough to interest us, and this is the case in this film.

The Outfit is a simple but effective crime thriller that finds its tension in well-written characters – an adapted performance above all by Mark Rylance and a few finely realized twists are quite enough fun for fans of “old school” thrillers.

my final grade: 7/10
