The opposition wants to allow uranium mining

All of the parties that make up Ulf Kristersson’s government base want to lift the ban on mining uranium in Sweden, shows a survey conducted by Sweden’s Radio Ekot.

Carl-Oskar Bohlin, M’s energy and business policy spokesperson, tells the radio that the ban will be removed if there is a change of government.

The ban on mining uranium, which is a controversial commodity, was introduced in 2018 as a result of the substance being weakly radioactive and considered to pose a significant environmental risk.

The Sweden Democrats do not share that picture.

– We cannot hold on and ban raw materials that we need, says Martin Kinnunen, environmental and climate policy spokesperson for SD, to the radio.

However, the red-green parties, including the Center, all say no to lifting the ban. According to Minister of Economic Affairs Karl-Petter Thorwaldsson (S), mining uranium would entail “fairly large risks” in terms of radioactivity.
