The philosophy he is talking about Anca Dragu, to follow your dream is by no means abstract. It starts right from experience. Anca graduated from ASE, went through internships and international trainings in the field of marketing, worked in multinationals, as a brand manager, and then began to create ceramics. In 2013 he enrolled at UNARTE, to study the arts at the Ceramics section, and now he is an artist and designer, the owner of the workshop A ca moon.
There is still a fresh relationship with ceramics, for 8 years, with adrenaline, as is the beginning of a relationship. It is a kind of profession of transformation of matter, of alchemy, which you master with difficulty, but with great satisfactions, says Anca
The metamorphoses of her pottery can be seen in art exhibitions international, or can be bought in the form of household items or jewelry, from the shop Una ca luna. All the objects he creates tell a story and are part of a special universe, says Anca. A universe in which inspiration is generous with its inhabitants. More about the story of this creative laboratory, in the following lines:
Marketing and porcelain
The first part of my career started after graduating from the Academy of Economic Studies in Bucharest, I wanted to work in marketing. It was an effervescent period, around 2000, when people were sent to courses abroad for marketing and communication because we don’t have a background.
But I started with market research and then I switched to the brand. I was passionate and it suited me because I could combine my accounting and management skills with creative ones. It was a beautiful period, in which I trained and learned a lot. Trainings and internships abroad opened my marketing horizons and I ended up working for beautiful brands. It was a boom period in which communication took place locally, with filming, integrated campaigns, alternative events, with everything you need, I also caught the beginnings of social media. I did and saw almost everything I could until it was no longer so interesting in terms of freedom of creation and local development.
In parallel, I started painting porcelain objects, creating small ceramic objects and in 2013 I decided to go to Unarte, to study the arts at the Ceramics section. In 2018 I also graduated the Master in Arts at UNArte.
There is still a fresh relationship with ceramics, for 8 years, with adrenaline, as is the beginning of a relationship. It is a kind of profession of transformation of matter, of alchemy, which you master with difficulty, but with great satisfactions.
Inspiration in a cup
In 2012 we created the Una ca Luna brand. The One as Moon philosophy is to give inspiration to those around you, inspiration through design, inspiration in a cup, inspiration to follow your dream. In previous years I participated in many profile fairs: Romania Design Week, Pop-up shop Brussels, Made in Ro, etc.
Artistic ceramics, sculptural is another important level of my activity. I started exhibiting in college, in personal and group exhibitions.
Some of the personal and group exhibitions: 2019 #Antropociberneticus, Galateea Contemporary Art, Guldagergaard International Research Center, Denmark, Portugal / ICR, London, Galateca Gallery Bucharest, European Fashion and Design Week Brussels / Ambiente Frankfurt.
Objects and stories
When I create a product that has a story or a name behind it, I often print it and attach it to objects from certain series, it seems to me that this is how you introduce customers to your universe. Flying mugs, Minions, Telescopic cups are names they give to a series of objects and their intention becomes easier to assimilate by the one who sees them for the first time.
I don’t like to describe the client’s profile, let’s say that among my clients are IQads readers 🙂
Many of them are people who choose to look for these items to buy locally, at least lately I have noticed this encouragement.
Entrepreneurship depends on passion
The step towards entrepreneurship taught me that it is worth doing only if it is related to passion. It is much more than a job and the notion of weekend is rare. You are GM and all departments at the same time, multiple personality.
And bringing the business to a high level of production would mean changes that I have not undertaken so far.
In 2020, the revenues fell by half, on the other hand I had projects, I didn’t stay in vain but I did them at a different pace, and I used the lock-down for creation, which I would still like. I think I would need 2 months a year dedicated to creation, planning, and a “normal” rhythm does not seem to let me take this vital breath. The pandemic year taught me that I need to create my own lockdown from time to time, to refresh my strength.
As a result, in 2021 we launched a new series of porcelain lamps that were presented at Romanian Design Week Selected and received the Big See Design Award 2021 from a major design festival in Slovenia dedicated to design projects, Central European architecture and the South East. I still want to promote these objects, I am looking for collaborations with interior architects, stores that want to sell these pieces to me.
I started working on a project in collaboration with a new culinary product that is being launched on the market and I am preparing a collection for this purpose, it is a project initiated by someone else, so a challenge for me.
In the coming months I will work as a specialist at Galateea Contemporary Art Gallery, a gallery dedicated to contemporary ceramics and I will slow down my studio plan a bit, focusing on ongoing projects and plans for 2022.
The small entrepreneur’s survival guide during a pandemic, which we hope will end:
1. Look at the good side of the crisis
2. Reduce expenses, recycle, use the stocks that still occupy your space
3. Wear a mask, get vaccinated, stay safe & healthy!
