The observation towers of the monastery and Smoke in Matsalu National Park will remain closed this summer, as repairs to the towers began.

Scaffolding already surrounds the monastery’s observation tower, and work will begin in the Smoke Tower in a few weeks. “It is expected that they will be ready by the end of August,” said Marju Pajumets, Visitor Manager of RMK’s West-Estonia Region, to Lääne Elule. The 14 and 21 m high metal towers will be cleaned, primed and painted, the foundation will be secured, the railings of the viewing platforms will be arranged, etc.

The smoke towers of Smoke and Monastery were erected in the 1990s. There are five RMK observation towers in Matsalu National Park: in addition to Suitsu and Kloostri, there are Rannajõgi, Penijõgi and Keemu observation towers. “While the Monastery and Smoke are under repair, we recommend discovering and visiting other towers in Matsalu,” said Pajumets.

The repair of the monastery and Smoky lookout towers will cost a little over 93,000 euros, financed by the European Union Cohesion Fund, RMK will bear 15 percent of its own contribution.
