The number of counterfeit banknotes and coins detected has risen sharply

The CNB seized a total of 4865 counterfeit coins and banknotes in euros in the first half of the year. In the same period last year, there were 169. According to the CNB, the counterfeits seized in May this year are technically simple, with one serial number without imitation security features. On a five-point security scale, which corresponds to the markings at school, these counterfeits were rated as grade four, ie as less successful, and as grade five, ie as unartificial counterfeits. “Thus, only their quantity can attract attention, not their danger,” the central bank said.

The number of counterfeits in crowns fell by 360 year-on-year to 360 from last year’s 377. The number of counterfeits in dollars rose to 104, last year it was 21.

In the whole of last year, 1,389 counterfeit and altered banknotes and coins of all currencies were seized in the Czech Republic, down 24 percent year-on-year. This was the sixth year-on-year decline in a row.

At the end of last year, approximately 2.7 billion banknotes and coins were in circulation in the Czech Republic, which is a year-on-year increase of four percent. The value of money in circulation rose from the previous year’s 642 billion to about 709 billion crowns. The data are without counting commemorative banknotes and coins in circulation.

Counterfeiters in the Czech Republic face up to eight years in prison for the crime of counterfeiting and altering money. In the case of an organized group or a significant amount of crime, the sentence is up to ten years.
