In recent months, immunization against Covid-19 has caused a large decline in the number of elderly people hospitalized for the disease, but children and adolescents 12-17 years of age have taken their place, according to a CDC report. Worse still, many of them are in really bad shape, requiring intensive care, and the only good news is that the mortality rate in this group remains virtually nil. Because although the risk of a serious course of Covid-19 and the need to stay in hospital increases with age, children and adolescents are not immune to the disease at all.
According to the agency, the rate of hospitalization in this age group was approximately 2.5-3 times higher than in the case of influenza from the last three seasons, and suggests that vaccinations for children and adolescents are also necessary (and for several days now also possible in our country, which meets with mixed reactions from parents). Nevertheless, the CDC emphasizes that such results should be a warning signal and an incentive to redouble efforts to vaccinate young people. It is worth noting that the report was prepared on the basis of American data, but it can be safely assumed that the situation is similar all over the world – it is enough to mention that a similar situation occurred in the case of vaccination of seniors, which meant that more and more younger people.
The CDC looked at data from medical centers in 14 states and found that 204 children were admitted to hospitals between January 1 and March 31, of which 64 required intensive care units and 10 were connected to a ventilator. Two-thirds of the group had comorbidities but 30% had no comorbidities, which shows well that children can also be seriously affected by Covid-19, which is life-threatening for them. The adolescent hospitalization rate peaked in January, in February it began to decline, to rise again in March, and in April to hit new records in some states, accompanying the resumption of overall morbidity. The reasons? According to the CDC, there may be several of them, one of them is the return of children to school, which caused local outbreaks, and another – the emergence of more contagious variants – and, of course, vaccination in older groups causes the virus to circulate in the younger had the opportunity to be vaccinated yet. It is worth noting, however, that as of June 4 in the United States, 6.4 million children aged 12-17 were vaccinated.
