The new generation of Opel Astra was recently named the winner of the “Golden Steering Wheel 2022” award. The new Astra continues the tradition of the German brand.
Opel is heading into the future with the new Astra. The twelfth generation of the compact model is more dynamic, has a bold design. It is available in both the five-door version and the Astra Sports Tourer version, which is the station wagon body format. The car incorporates new technologies, such as the fully digital Pure Panel cockpit or full LED adaptive headlights. Inside, the car has AGR certified active ergonomic seats for the driver and passenger. Last but not least, Astra customers have a wide range of engine variants at their disposal. The five-door Astra and Sports Tourer are not only available with internal combustion engines, but also, for the first time, as plug-in hybrids. Also, the Astra Electric version will be available on the market starting next year. Opel expects the Astra to be among the brand’s most popular models.
Opel has a history spanning 160 years
The Opel Olympia rolled off the assembly line as the first series-produced car after the reconstruction of the Rüsselsheim plant. The 1947 Olympia differed from its predecessor in particular with an improved double wishbone front axle and a slightly shorter wheelbase. The axle and steering system of the two-door car now come from Opel Kapitän. In less than a year, the larger model, the four-door Opel Kapitän, enters series production. As early as June 8, 1949, Opel officials announce the completion of the 100,000th Olympia with a 1.5-liter engine.
The new generation of the Opel Astra model is also produced in the factory in Rüsselsheim. Like the Olympia model 75 years ago, Opel believes that the new Astra can write a significant chapter in the history of the brand. Next year, the sporty Astra GSe and Astra Electric will be produced at this plant, alongside the standard plug-in hybrid version. Thus, the Astra will become the first Opel model available in all propulsion variants. The compact will be offered with combustion engines, as well as the version with electric propulsion.
