The Natrium depleted uranium reactor from TerraPower will be located in Kemmerer, USA

TerraPower is a project backed by Bill Gates, a nuclear reactor technology that works with depleted rather than enriched uranium. The enriched one is needed only in small quantities to start the reaction. The Natrium reactor was supposed to start building in China about 3 years ago, but due to the US trade war with China and the ban on the export of American technologies (let alone related to nuclear processes), the stem fell and searched for alternative locations 5 years ago. It has been known for some time that it will be one of the decommissioned coal-fired power plants in Wyoming. Now it has been decided which one.

It will be a power plant in Kremmerer, where the last two units should expire in 2025. But everything is not certain yet, TerraPower still needs to obtain all the necessary permits and assumes that this could be done in 2023. We will then wait for construction and commissioning another 7 years. The construction should employ up to 2,000 people, and the power plant itself will offer 250 jobs once completed.

The Advanced Reactor Demonstration Projects (ARDP), which will provide $ 2.5 billion to two projects, will receive $ 1.5 billion, and another $ 0.5 billion will be provided by the DoE (Department of Energy). TerraPower will bring the second half and the total costs will climb to 4 billion USD (90 billion CZK). The reactor should have an output of 345 MW, however, thanks to the storage using molten salts, the output could rise to 500 MW in the short term (up to 5.5 hours).
