The ministry offers HP, Acer and Lenovo to install Russian operating systems on laptops and computers

The Ministry of Digital Industry is negotiating with HP, Acer and Lenovo on the pre-installation of Russian operating systems on laptops and computers, reports Kommersant.

The ministry wants manufacturers to pre-install Astra Linux and ALT Linux on devices that are shipped to Russia without operating systems in order to “stimulate domestic software developers.”

The experiment is planned to be launched in the first quarter of 2022. In total, next year, Russian operating systems should be installed on at least 100 thousand computers and laptops.

If the program is successful, it can be expanded. In this case, domestic operating systems will be installed on 1 million PCs per year.

Experts doubt the effectiveness of the project. They believe that after purchasing a computer, the owners will install a pirated copy of Windows. [Коммерсантъ]
