The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine believes that the United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission resorted to unacceptable actions when it decided to equate Ukraine as a victim with Russia, which is the aggressor.

As stated in statement The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, the Foreign Policy Department of Ukraine took into account the reports prepared by the UN Monitoring Mission in Ukraine, namely another report on the human rights situation in Ukraine and a report on the treatment of prisoners of war.

“We are grateful to the monitoring mission for its work, in particular documenting violations of international law in the field of human rights and international humanitarian law committed by the Russian Federation in the context of armed aggression against Ukraine. At the same time, we consider it unacceptable to place responsibility on the victim of aggression. According to the UN Charter, Ukraine has the right to self-defense,” the statement emphasizes.

“As the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine has repeatedly emphasized, the Ukrainian side expects that the UN mission will avoid any steps that could be interpreted as equating the victim and the aggressor,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs added.

UN report on prisoners of war – details

The UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine presented two new reports – on the treatment of prisoners of war and the general situation with human rights in Ukraine for the six months to January 31 of this year. The UN mission claimed alleged violations of the rights of Russian prisoners of war by the Ukrainian side.

At the same time, the Commissioner for Human Rights of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Dmytro Lubinets, expressed his surprise that United Nations representatives never once spoke about alleged violations of the rights of Russian prisoners in Ukraine at personal meetings.
