According to Anneli Ackermann, Chairman of the Riigikogu Finance Committee (Reform Party), the turnover tax rate may increase, but not more than up to 9%. The purpose of such a decision is to reduce the increase in tax for the hotel sector, writes ERR.

As previously reported, the preferential VAT rate for media companies is currently 5% in Estonia, the government is going to raise it to 9% (medicines are subject to the same VAT, for example).

As for the hospitality sector, according to Äripäev, the new turnover tax rate will be 13% for them instead of the current 9%.

When asked if the VAT for the press could rise to the same level as the new tax rate for the hotel sector, Ackermann replied in the negative.

“The Financial Commission is in a stalemate. If we want to go along with the hotel sector and leave the tax increase at, say, 13 percent, then we can’t go along with the press and leave them with a 5% VAT rate. It will need to be raised to the level of pharmaceuticals,” she explained.

According to Ackermann, she has already met with representatives of the media, and they have made it clear that the sector will suffer from a possible increase in taxes: “Unfortunately, we need to improve the position of the state budget.”

The deadline for amending the tax bills is the end of May, and consideration of the changes will last until June 6.

Increasing the turnover tax for media companies is expected to lead to layoffs: according to Äripäev, about 100 journalists out of 850 could lose their jobs.
