LG presented at the event organized at CES 2021 its first roll-up screen phone. The mobile phone does not yet have an official name and is not even a finished product, as the company currently mentions it only as LG Rollable. This is practically the South Korean company’s response to the alternatives with foldable screens in the last few years, and the concept is very similar to the one presented just a few weeks ago by the Chinese manufacturer Oppo.
LG Rollable is the company’s answer to the foldable devices of the competition
LG is no stranger to rolling screen technology. LG Display is one of the largest manufacturers of OLED screens in the world, its technologies being used by most TV manufacturers, and many smartphone manufacturers use its solutions. LG introduced a rolling stock TV at CES two years ago, and last year brought it to market as a real product. Thus, a rolling phone should not be very far away, once we have reached the point where the company presents it in the prototype stage.
The LG Rollable seems to be heading in the direction of a phone that can quickly turn into a small tablet by expanding the side of the screen. Basically, the screen is rolled on the sides of the device, and a mechanism allows the two parts of the device to move away to reveal the rest of the screen.
The advantage of such a device is obvious. The phone can be used like a traditional one most of the time and can be extended when you need more space. For example, in productivity applications, where you need to display more applications on the screen, or when editing a complex spreadsheet in Excel. Even for reading, a more “square” screen helps you have a more comfortable experience.
Early information about the specifications of this device suggests that the 6.8 ”screen in phone mode, with a Full HD + resolution of 2,428 x 1,080 pixels, can be expanded to 7.4” and a resolution of 2,428 x 1,600 pixels. Thus, the full screen, when extended, is not very different in size from a Galaxy Fold from Samsung. The advantage would be that no double thickness is required for such a device, and the folding stripe is not present.
