Miss Marple hates being idle, so it’s no wonder that the wheels in her head don’t stop turning even while on vacation in the hot Caribbean. Major Palgrave’s sudden death, despite his old age, immediately arouses suspicion in her, because only the day before she heard an interesting story from him about a serial killer. Unless the local authorities declare his death natural.

Even the circumstances of the murder of the native maid, who is found dead on the beach shortly after, are difficult to clarify without allies, such as Miss Marple easily finds in England. Looking for them among the hotel guests is extremely risky, but the wise old lady does not give up. She uses her most powerful weapon – casual conversation – to win the affection of eccentric millionaire Mr. Rafiel, and with his help, she tries to convict the real culprit.

A Caribbean secret is Agatha Christie’s last literary trip to the exotic and at the same time Miss Marple’s first real trip to the far corners of the world. Once again, the queen of detectives left nothing to chance – the Mallowan couple visited the Caribbean several times in the 60s, so they knew the environment well. And the prototype for the island of St. Honoré was probably the island of St. Lucia in the Lesser Antilles, between the island of Martinique and St. Vincent. The island formed by former volcanic activity is covered with evergreen rainforests. That is also why it is called the evergreen island.

Read on for the detective story Caribbean Secret:

“There was even a murder here about two years ago. The guy’s name was Harry Western. They made a big fuss about it in the newspapers. Perhaps you still remember.’

Miss Marple nodded without apparent enthusiasm. It wasn’t murder to her liking. The big uproar was caused mainly by the fact that all the participants belonged to the richest cream of the crop. Harry Western appears to have shot the lover of his own wife, Count de Ferrari, and at the same time procured a convincing alibi for which he paid handsomely.

At the time in question, everyone was drunk or high on drugs. Not very interesting people, thought Miss Marple—though undoubtedly striking and attractive at first glance.

But not for her.

“And, to tell you the truth, it wasn’t the only murder at the time.”

Major Palgrave nodded his head and squinted his good eye. “I had a suspicion…well, but now what…”

A ball of wool fell to Miss Marple’s floor, and the Major stooped gallantly to hand it to her.

“Speaking of murders,” carried on, “I once encountered a very strange case… well, I don’t mean personally.”

Miss Marple smiled encouragingly.

“Several of us were talking in the club, you know how the debate gets heated sometimes, and one of the members joined in with a certain story. He was a doctor. He talked about his case. At midnight, a young guy knocked on his door. His wife hanged herself. They didn’t have a phone, so as soon as her husband cut her off and did what he knew, he got in the car and raced to the doctor. The woman did not die, but she narrowly escaped death. In any case, she survived. Her husband was very devoted to her. He cried like a child. He said that she had been behaving strangely for a long time, that she suffered from depression. But now she was rescued and it looked like everything was fine. But about a month later, out of nowhere, the woman took an overdose of sleeping pills and died. A sad case…” Major Palgrave fell silent and nodded thoughtfully…
