The last seven years have been the warmest in the history of meteorological observations in the world, according to the Latvian Center for the Environment, Geology and Meteorology.

Last year, 2021, ranks 5th in the ranking of the warmest years. The first five months of the year were relatively cooler, and from June to October, global average temperatures were among the highest on record.

So, last year, the average annual air temperature in the world was 0.3 degrees Celsius higher than the average for 1991-2020, and also 1.1-1.2 degrees higher than in the pre-industrial period from 1850 to 1900. .

In 2021, Europe experienced the hottest summer on record. In addition, a number of extreme weather events were observed: unprecedented heat in the Mediterranean region and severe floods in Central Europe.

The concentration of greenhouse gases continued to increase in the past year, as evidenced by a preliminary analysis of satellite measurements. New record concentrations of carbon and methane were also recorded.

In Latvia, last year, 2021, was also warmer than the standard climatic norm: the average air temperature was +7 degrees, which is 0.2 degrees above the norm. Thus, 2021 was the ninth year in a row warmer than the norm.

As in Europe, last summer in Latvia was the hottest on record, but we also experienced the coldest winter in the last 8 years.

According to scientists, such a warming is an existential threat of our time and a call for decisive action to save the future of our planet. The reason for this climate change is human activity, as a result of which the emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere has increased.
