The greatest expansion of telephone booths occurred at the turn of the millennium, when there were 30,000 of them in the Czech streets. Since then, their number has been declining every year. The use of vending machines has declined significantly, in recent years many of them have called less than once a month and the booths became the target of vandals rather than a place to call. Revenues from calls thus fell far short of maintenance and operating costs.
