Italy is the country that is fighting the most to reverse the Rural exodus. Different localities and regions have launched ambitious plans to repopulate their villages. Currently, at least 12 towns sell houses for one euro throughout the country. But this initiative is not the only one that attracts attention. And it is that the region of Calabria will launch in the coming weeks a plan to attract new residents by offering 28,000 euros in three years.
To raise the money, new residents have to commit to starting a local business, either from scratch or by accepting existing offers from specific professionals in need in the towns. Most of these localities do not reach 2,000 inhabitants.
Likewise, they have to commit to reside there and not be more than 30 years old. When your application is accepted, you have a maximum period of 90 days to move and start your new life in one of the towns in the region.
The regional councilor Gianluca Gallo specifies in ‘CNN‘that the monthly income can be between 1,000 and 800 euros for two or three years (an average of 28,000 euros if the three years are completed). In addition, there could be financial support to open a local business such as a restaurant, bar, or store.
“We are specifying the last details, such as the exact amount of the monthly rent, the duration of the same and the possibility of including slightly larger towns of up to 3,000 inhabitants in the program,” says the councilor.
The goal is to launch a social inclusion experiment. “Bringing people to live in the region implies updates for the area, such as the renovation of buildings and installation of high speed internet“says Gianpietro Coppola, mayor of Altomonte who contributed to the development of the project.
The initiative is expected to go live in the coming weeks. The leaders of the region have been working on it for months and have allocated 700,000 euros.
The villages already confirmed in the project
For now, these are the nine towns in which it will be possible to apply to obtain residency there:
- San Donato di Ninea
- Santa Severina
- Sant’Agata del Bianco
