Olbia (Italy) – The Italian rally is led after the second stage in Sardinia by world champion and leader of the championship standings Sébastien Ogier. After 16 of 20 special stages, the French driver of the Toyota team has a significant lead of 38.9 seconds over his teammate Elfyn Evans from Britain.
The sad figure of the rally was again the Estonian Ott Tänak. Last year’s world champion developed a 40-second lead before Ogier, but in today’s fourth stage he had to resign from the first place, just like two weeks ago in Portugal. Tänak hit a rock and damaged the rear suspension of his Hyundai car.
The unsuccessful day of the Korean brand was underlined by the winner of the Italian rally from the last two years, Dani Sordo. The Spaniard was second only to Ogier, but in the penultimate test he went over the roof with his i20 and did not finish. Only Belgian Thierry Neuville is chasing Toyota, losing in a third position for over a minute.
Czech driver Martin Prokop with a Ford Fiesta is fifteenth before the final four Sunday special stages.
