The Institute of Physics in Belgrade has joined the SAIGE project to accelerate innovation

The Institute of Physics in Belgrade, together with five other institutes, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development in order to support the process of transformation of institutes that perform scientific research activities. The signing ceremony was organized in the Government of the Republic of Serbia on Tuesday, December 28, 2021. “The Ministry of Science, Education and Technological Development strongly supports excellence in science and is committed to long-term quality assurance of scientific research,” said Branko Ruzic, First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Science and Technological Development, during the signing ceremony.

About 13 million euros have been allocated for the transformation of the institute, through the Project of Acceleration of Innovations and Encouragement of Entrepreneurship Growth in the Republic of Serbia – Serbia Accelerating Innovation and Growth Entrepreneurship Project (SAIGESAIGE), which is financed and implemented through a strong partnership of the Republic of Serbia, the World Bank and the European Union, with the aim of additional investment in science, technological development, innovation and innovative entrepreneurship.

“Through cooperation on similar capacity building projects, especially with the World Bank, the Institute has transformed in recent years and become an institute of national importance. This project will help us now face the key question: how to use great creative energy in science to strengthen the economy and society as a whole in the Republic of Serbia, “said Dr. Aleksandar Bogojevic, director of the Institute of Physics in Belgrade.

Speaking at the signing of the importance of the project, the implementation of which began in May 2020, Prof. Dr. Viktor Nedovic, project director SAIGEHe pointed out that the implementation takes place through three components, which include: further reform of the scientific research sector, support for the Science Fund program and strengthening cooperation with the Serbian diaspora, as well as support for the new program of the Innovation Fund – Acceleration Program.

Goal of a project SAIGE is to improve the relevance and excellence of scientific research and raise the capacity of scientific research organizations, as well as to promote innovative entrepreneurship and access to sources of funding for company growth and contribute to growth in the competitiveness of the Serbian economy.

SAIGE The project is of great importance not only for the Institute of Molecular Genetics and Genetic Engineering, but also for all participants and the scientific community of Serbia, because through this support in terms of transformation of scientific institutes we have a better chance to join global trends in science and economics. “, Pointed out Dr. Jelena Begović, director of IMGGI. This institute and the Institute of Physics in Belgrade are the only ones that have already gone through a similar project, which has affected both of these institutions.

In 2020, the Ministry conducted a process of evaluating institutes that perform scientific research activities on the basis of a questionnaire in which the institutes themselves assessed the current situation and key opportunities for improvement. The institutes also said they wanted to continue to participate on a voluntary basis in a process involving external international expert assessment and the preparation of a transformation plan. After the declaration, the selection followed and the first group of six institutes was selected, which continued to participate in the further process.
