Today, the Minister of Economic Affairs and Infrastructure Taavi Aas met with the mayors of Saaremaa, Hiiumaa and Muhumaa and jointly decided that the increase in the price of ferry tickets for the visitors of the islands planned for the beginning of February will be postponed.

According to Aasa, the rural municipality leaders wanted more time to get acquainted with the ticket regulation and make their own proposals. “It is wise to take time off and give local leaders more time to think and make suggestions,” said Aas. “At the beginning of the new year, we will renegotiate, including when the price increase will take effect.”

However, the Minister emphasized that the planned price increase is inevitable, as the rise in energy prices, the general increase in costs and the need to make additional trips require additional money. “Certainly, the price for local people will not rise, so as not to worsen their quality of life,” he added. Next summer, 529 additional trips are planned to Saaremaa and 212 to Hiiumaa.

Passenger tickets will increase by 1.29 euros on the Saaremaa route and by 1.46 euros on the Hiiumaa route. The car ticket will increase by 3.6 euros on the Saaremaa route and 4.29 euros on the Hiiumaa route. The ticket price for large trucks and buses will increase by three euros, and two euros will be added to the ticket price for trailers. The price for regular buses remains the same.
