There is no Blitzkrieg, instead there is a traditional war

Originally, the Western powers and Russia also expected a blitzkrieg, the Biden administration even planned the evacuation of the entire Ukrainian government – but this did not happen. “Contrary to expectations, a traditional combat situation has developed in the eastern territory of Ukraine, similar to the one in the 20th century. we saw it several times in the 20th century,” said Edward N. Luttwak.

The consultant, who also has a military background, emphasized that many people in the US military leadership have never participated in real battles and have no experience of European conditions. The situation is further complicated by the diverse national composition of the Russian army: in addition to mercenaries, Moscow is fighting this war with Chechen and Buryat soldiers.

Russian President Vladimir Putin avoids full mobilization in order to avoid a significant wave of protests in Russia. Therefore, the Russian army is not fighting with its full capacity even in the city of Bahmut, for example, but instead launches local offensives and focuses on local targets so that “special operations” do not have to be declared a war, said the American expert.

Edward N. Luttwak also touched on the fact that in addition to the war with traditional means, there is an information and cyber war too. He did not want to speculate on the outcome of the conflict, but noted that after a traditional war, a traditional peace treaty will be necessary.
