The Iliad group ready to invest 1 billion euros for carbon neutrality from 2035

Bringing direct carbon emissions to zero by 2035 and striving to reduce indirect emissions by 2050: this is the group’s new objective. Iliad to achieve carbon neutrality before the date established by the Paris Agreements.

By the way, Xavier Niel takes the opportunity to scratch the government and its inaction on the subject. He wants to show with the Climate Strategy presented this Thursday that it must be possible to obtain concrete results within a reasonable timeframe.

This strategy is still costed at 1 billion euros, at a time when the operator Free Mobile must build its 5G network in the coming years. Part of this investment over fifteen years must also be used to buy more energy efficient equipment to drastically reduce CO2 emissions and limit electricity consumption which represented 827 GWh in 2019.

Thomas Reynaud, managing director of Iliad, also indicated that the program aims to make real efforts to reduce emissions, and not simply carbon offsets.

A complicated goal but a desire to move forward

The use of carbon sinks with tree plantations will only be done as a last step for the last residual emissions. The Director General dismisses the claims of a polluting 5G to assert on the contrary that “5G is green technology“, to be understood at least in the sense that it is best placed to respond to the growth in the uses and speeds of mobile networks, when staying on previous technologies would be much more polluting and consuming more energy.

Xavier Niel instead points the finger at smartphones as a source of pollution and still criticizes the smartphone subsidy policies of his competitors.

To be greener, Iliad / Free will still have to deal with the efforts to deploy its networks, in France and on its other European markets. Italy and especially Poland are still far from going in the direction of the expectations of the Climate Strategy but the boss of Iliad considers that it is already a step forward whereas “lhe political power does not have the courage to take the necessary measures“.
