The ROG Ally PC console will soon be available here, and the price is not too bad compared to its capabilities.
A month and a half after its announcement, ASUS ROG Ally’s PC-based handheld console is already arriving, which clearly aims to be a rival to Steam Deck and starts with good chances. We have to pay at least 419 euros (approx. HUF 156,000) for Valve’s handheld console, but in return we only get a 64 GB model, the 256 GB version costs EUR 549 (approx. HUF 204,000), the 512 GB and they ask for 679 euros (approx. HUF 252,000).
Well, the ASUS ROG Ally will be more expensive, but at least its hardware is more modern than the Deck that was released last February.
The Hungarian price was set at HUF 307,490, so in return we get a machine running Windows 11 Home with a three-month Xbox Game Pass subscription. The machine is powered by a Zen 4 architecture, 8-core and 16-thread, boosted 5.1 GHz AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor, and the RDNA3 GPU with 4GB VRAM includes 12 CUs and approximately 8 Capable of .6 TFlops performance. They are supported by 16 GB of dual-channel, 6400 MT/s LPDDR5 RAM.
Its 7″ display has a resolution of 1920×1080, refreshes at 120 Hz and supports AMD FreeSync Premium, and as a storage space we can use a 512 GB NVMe m.2 SSD, which can hold a game or two. For safety, microSD- a card reader was also installed.
We can charge it with 65W via a USB-C cable, the USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 port also has DisplayPort 1.4 support. It can be connected to a monitor with the ROG Gaming Charger Dock, which can be purchased separately, or if we wanted to give it extra power, we could do it with an external video card, but none of the editions of the ROG XG Mobile are cheap.
The release is expected on June 13. A weaker version with a 6-core/12-thread CPU will be available in the third quarter of the year.
We’ll start testing it soon and report in detail on how it feels to play, how well it can replace a PC, and what it can offer as a handheld console.
