The Ministry of Economy will look for solutions for organizing open markets, said the head of the Ministry of Economy Janis Vitenbergs.

He noted that it is important to find a solution because December is the time when, by tradition, artisans can sell goods prepared and created throughout the year.

Prime Minister Karins believes that the government will be able to make a decision on this issue this week.

The Cabinet of Ministers previously approved the regulation, according to which the organization of street trading, including Christmas markets, will be prohibited until January 11 next year.

According to the Latvian Home Producers Society, this government decision was made without any negotiations with industry representatives and without realizing the consequences for hundreds of home producers and their families.

Society representatives believe that the organizers of Christmas fairs and New Year markets are able to ensure their organization in a “green mode” or only for persons with a covid certificate.
