The government led by Mario Draghi wins the trust in the Senate

The Draghi government cashed in the trust of the Senate with 262 votes in favor, 40 against, 2 abstentions and 17 absent. The Prime Minister, Mario Draghi, obtained the favorable vote from the vast majority of the parliamentary groups of Palazzo Madama: the yes to trust came from Movimento 5 Stelle, Lega, Pd, Forza Italia, Italia Viva and most of the components of the Mixed Group, such as Leu, Action, + Europe and others. The long day opened at 10 with the keynote speech by Prime Minister Mario Draghi, in which he reiterated the priority points, starting from the pandemic and the economy, recalling the importance of what seem to be some pillars for the former governor of the ECB: Europeanism, Atlanticism, environment, innovation and school. After many hours of parliamentary debate, interrupted several times by the sanitization of the Chamber, the explanations of vote were reached only in the evening. The actual vote, by roll call, only began in the late evening.

The record of votes for trust

Draghi knew he could count on a very large majority, which is why the only real doubt of this vote concerned a possible one record of parliamentary consensus by the new government. Going to see the previous cases of Bulgarian majority on the vote of confidence, the first potentially sensational case was that of Carlo Azeglio Ciampi: in his case, however, a government that initially had to contain almost all the parliamentary parties saw the abstention by the PDS and Verdi. Then it was the turn of the government led by Lamberto Dini, voted by the center-left and the League, but with the abstention of the center-right and the contrary vote of Rifondazione. The record is held by another technical government, that of Mario Monti: in 2011, at the first trust, he obtained 281 yes and 25 no to the trust in the Senate. In the Chamber, however, the record, also held by Monti, is 556 yes and 61 against, with no abstentions.

Tomorrow the confidence vote in the House

After the vote in the Senate tomorrow, Thursday 18 February, it will be the turn of the Chamber of the Chamber of Deputies: confidence will be voted in the evening. The discussion will start at 9 am, regarding government communications and the debate on Draghi’s keynote speech. The first interruption will arrive at 12, with the sanitization of the Chamber of Deputies. It will resume at 13.30 with the general debate, with a new suspension – again to sanitize the Chamber – at 16. Draghi’s reply is scheduled for 18, at the end of the discussion. Draghi will have about half an hour, because the explanations of vote of the representatives of the groups and political components of the mixed group will begin at 6.30 pm. After the declarations, according to forecasts around 8 pm, the vote will proceed by roll call.
