The gargling test is similarly reliable as a swab – Home – News

The saline solution should be gargled for 30 seconds. Then spit into the ampoule and the rest is on the medics. The result will be sent by SMS within 24 hours. Testing in the form of gargling brings about a significant change in the methods by which the coronavirus is detected in a patient. This means that the test can also be done by gargling and will replace the classic deep nasal swab.

Recently, it is already possible to have a sample for testing for the presence of coronavirus taken by gargling. Pupils in schools should also be tested in a similar way, but the Ministry of Education has not yet agreed who will arrange it.

From Saturday, Slovaks will be able to register for the PCR test for coronavirus by gargling. It will be an alternative to nasopharyngeal swabs. Alpha medical, which is the first to launch commercial sampling, claims that the test result will be extremely accurate. The sample is evaluated by a reliable PCR method, and so far only the one who pays can get the gargle test.

Gargling testing

The sample they obtain from saliva is very similar to that taken by swab. “These are the data we work with, and in practice this means, simply put, that the test has only slightly lower sensitivity, but can still capture low viral loads well, which, for example, cannot handle an accurate laboratory antigen test,” said Peter. Lednický.

Validation of tests was also validated on positive patients hospitalized in COVID-19 wards. “We tested the accuracy on hundreds of samples, we only did about six hundred tests on Friday,” Lednický explained.

“For stereos, you have to remove the mucus to get RNA protein from the sample, and for saliva, it’s no different. When gargling, we have to remove saliva and other clutter, so we have to do RNA extraction, which then travels to the laboratory, “added Lednický.

In the gargling associated with the return of children to school, pooling is often mentioned. It is a method in which several samples are combined into one and it is subsequently evaluated. If this group sample is positive, everyone must be able to be tested to find a positive one.

“Putting together ten or thirty children, if the negative results come out, it’s good. However, if you have a positive result, each of the children should be tested separately. Pooling a hundred samples may be fine, but tracing will be a bit more difficult, “Lednický concluded. The great advantage of gargling tests is that everyone will take the sample themselves. This could significantly relieve healthcare professionals in the future. The price of the test is 59 euros, for comparison , examination of the nasopharyngeal swab costs 50 euros.
