The future of RES and grid connection problems

There was great interest in this year’s 13th Conference on Electric Distribution Networks of Serbia – CIRED. For years now, there has been a search for a place more for Consulting, which gathers a large number of experts in the field of development and distribution of electricity. This is an ideal opportunity for companies from the country and the region to show their rich portfolio.

The MT-KOMEX leader company is the leader in our country when it comes to the construction of solar power plants, but also energy efficiency and e-mobility. Bojan Jovanović, electrical engineer of this company, said that the expert team of MT-KOMEX consists of 30 mechanical, electrical, traffic, architecture, economists, philologists and 40 installers.

As he pointed out, the company deals with the construction of solar power plants on a turnkey basis, the installation of chargers for electric cars, as well as the development and promotion of the charger network, and they also made a kind of turn towards electromobility with the first online platform and application for EV charging – Charge&GO.

The director of the company MT-KOMEX, Miloš Kostić, participated in one of the round tables of this year’s CIRED, which discussed renewable energy sources, their connection to the grid, development of projects and their capacities, as well as the quality of electricity and the quality of delivery.

“The EU connected 39 GW of installed power from solar power plants to the grid in 2022, they presented a plan for 400 GW of installed power in PV power plants by 2025, and 740 GW by 2030. The EU’s goal is that by 2030, at least 45 percent of the power will be from renewable sources,” said Kostić.

He specifically referred to the projects of solar power plants in Serbia, as well as the procedure for connecting to the grid and acquiring the status of buyer-producer.

“The electricity distribution company is most concerned about how they will manage when 50,000 small facilities that produce electricity appear. On the website of Elektrodistribucija, 200 are currently registered as customer-producer, and many power plants that have been built and completed are still not registered, waiting to be connected, while the distribution is experiencing great congestion”, says Kostić.

As he says, electricity traders, and there are more than 70 of them in Serbia, are still not ready to enter the market and comply with the regulatory framework in addition to Elektroprivreda, which is a guaranteed supplier.

“Until recently, we were all talking about reducing CO2 emissions, and now we are all talking about energy independence and security, the principles of entering into any investment and the business segment we deal with have completely changed. Instead of giving a boost to industry and the economy through the new regulation, with new subsidies, they were given only to households, nothing to industry. “The industry is the biggest investor that can reduce the import of electricity,” explains Kostić.

He also referred to the fact that Serbia provides serious support, both to citizens and to the economy, with subsidized electricity prices.

Is the future of solar energy important in Serbia, Kostić wonders, and how much we can contribute together.

“By facilitating the procedures and simplifying the process of accepting power plants into the network. Together with the Elektrodistribucija commission, we have connected more than 40 power plants to the grid, according to the customer-producer principle. The commission should not go out to power plants up to 50 kilowatts, all responsibility must be transferred to the responsible person and an accredited body that must go out to examine the installations and submit a report. “We don’t have enough staff to go out to the facilities to give consent for the connection,” explains Kostić.

According to him, there is a lack of equipment in Serbia, due to the current situation in the world and high demand, but if the company MT-KOMEX had provided it in time for this year’s operations, they have built 40 megawatts of solar power plants so far.

CIRED participants had the opportunity to hear from Kostić all about the digital platform and the Charge&GO application, which allows drivers of electric vehicles to easily locate the nearest chargers and to top them up quickly and easily. The platform provides drivers with an efficient service for charging and paying for the use of charging points, as well as the ability for companies to remotely manage their charging network.

“With Virt, we managed to enter the network system of 170,000 chargers, and by the beginning of 2023 we will enter directly with our new application”, points out Miloš Kostić.

As he added, seven chargers have been installed at GAZPROM gas stations, while 12 will be installed at OMV, and five have been installed so far. Chargers from this network can also be found at some locations of the retail chain Stop Shop, in shopping centers Promenada, Novi Sad and Big fashion, Kragujevac, as well as at representatives of the automotive industry in Serbia, such as British Motors, AK Kompresor and Hit Auto.

So far, the company Charge&GO has installed electric chargers with power from 22 to 180 kW at more than 40 locations on the roads and highways of Serbia, and by the end of the year the network will cover as many as 100 charging points, where there will be more and more ultra-fast chargers with higher power.
