The former prime minister pointed out that the losses were 5 billion dollars

The current Ukrainian government should be held responsible for not buying gas at a lower price and is now forced to overpay it, former Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk told Ukraine 24 television, noting that the state’s losses due to such actions are five billion dollars. .

– Now, 5 billion dollars will be taken out of the pockets of Ukrainians – think about this figure. These are the losses of the state and the state company NAK ‘Naftogaz’ because, when they had to buy (gas) for $ 250 (for a thousand cubic meters), they did not buy it, and now they have to buy it for $ 1,200 (for a thousand cubic meters) ). Five billion dollars is the amount that is equivalent to the total annual defense expenditures, Jacenjuk pointed out.

He reminded that Ukraine has one of the largest underground gas storage facilities in Europe and that it could afford to pump gas for future use.

– How can we make sure that we do not pay Russia almost two thousand dollars for a thousand cubic meters of gas? The key formula is that gas should have been bought when it cost $ 250 (for a thousand cubic meters). Not everyone could afford that, because not everyone has gas storage. Ukraine has the largest gas storage facilities in Europe, ‘Naftogaz’ had two billion dollars in its account. For that money, it was possible to buy a sufficient amount of gas and pump it into warehouses, the former prime minister is convinced.

Yatsenyuk believes that the increased gas prices are “speculations prepared by the Russian ‘Gazprom'”, but he emphasized that the current government should be responsible for the current situation in Ukraine.

– The current government of Ukraine bears personal responsibility for that, he stated.

Speaking about further moves, the former prime minister proposed to the Ukrainian parliament to form an investigation commission which should clarify “on whose order 5 billion dollars were extracted from the pockets of Ukrainians”. In addition, the country should buy additional blue fuel, but for that, according to him, it is still necessary to find gas.

Kiev’s problems with gas supplies have worsened after Ukraine stopped buying Russian gas directly in November 2015, replacing it with so-called virtual reverse gas from Europe, which affected prices for Ukrainian consumers. Ukraine refused to continue direct deliveries of Russian gas at a reduced price, which was agreed in 2019 by the head of the political council of the Opposition Platform – For Life party Viktor Medvedchuk, when Russia was ready to supply Ukraine with gas at a fixed price of $ 175 per thousand cubic meters. The situation with the price of gas has worsened for Ukraine after Russia completed the construction of the “North Stream 2” gas pipeline and the sharp rise in energy prices in Europe.

Gas prices in Europe have jumped sharply in recent months. From the beginning of August to the end of September, the price more than doubled, and on October 6, it reached a historical maximum of 1,937 dollars per thousand cubic meters, after which the market began to fall, but prices still exceed the limit of one thousand dollars.

Experts attribute the increase in gas prices to the low level of gas storage occupancy, the limited supply of major suppliers and the high demand for natural liquefied natural gas in Asia.
