On the A4 motorway, near the exit for the town of San Dona di Piave, near Venice, the driver of a van collided at considerable speed with the rear of a lorry, which was traveling slowly due to heavy traffic. The van, in which there were seven people with a passenger, was stuck under the trailer.

A 63-year-old man was behind the wheel of the van Massimo Pironi, former mayor of Riccione. Firefighters pulled six dead, four women and two men, including the driver, from the wreckage. One seriously injured passenger was taken to a hospital in Venice.

The van is said to belong to the association Cen.tr.o.21, which deals with helping young disabled people. It was said to have come from the Emilia-Romagna region and was destined for Friuli-Venezia Giulia.
