Chinese authorities have launched an investigation into Li Tie, the former head coach of the national football team, the Hubei province anti-corruption authority said in a briefing on Saturday.
“Li Tie is suspected of serious violation of the law,” reads the message posted on the institution’s website, according to Reuters.
Authorities did not provide details, and Li could not be reached for comment.
The former Everton midfielder, 45, left the national team last December amid growing criticism of his side’s performances in the 2022 World Cup qualifying campaign. He has been replaced by Li Xiaopeng.
Li Tie took over as head coach from Marcello Lippi in January 2020. He previously worked as Lippi’s assistant coach during the Italian’s spells at Guangzhou Evergrande and the Chinese national team. At the same time, he also coached the Chinese Super League teams Hebei China Fortune and Wuhan Zall.
