Based on the Agreement on Cooperation between Ministry of Culture and Information, National Libraries of Serbia, National Museum in Belgrade i Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts it is successful the first phase of digitization of Miroslav’s Gospel was realized.
Even the era of Stefan Nemanja cannot escape digitalization
The recording was performed in a specially prepared room of the National Museum, and for that purpose the most modern scanners adapted for digitization of sensitive material of cultural heritage were used. Defining the recording parameters as well as the recording itself was entrusted to experts from the Audiovisual Archive of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts under the supervision of the conservator of the National Library and the curator of the National Museum.
Miroslav’s Gospel has been digitized in five variants, and each side and each illumination with one or two light bodies, which made it possible to see every detail, as well as the whole book. As a final result, it was made through the digitization process about 2,000 images of the highest quality that include 400 illuminations.
The next phase includes the presentation of digitized material through the Cultural Heritage Search Engine, as well as the websites of the competent institutions in order to make Miroslav’s Gospel available to both domestic and foreign audiences.
Miroslav’s Gospel is the most important Cyrillic monument of Serbian and South Slavic, ie Serbian-Slavic literacy from the 12th century. In 2005, UNESCO included it in its library “Memory of the World”, which made it part of the 120 most valuable goods created by human civilization.
