the exposition and tamarins are growing, and the otter is waiting for a friend from Spain

The ban on visiting tourist sites during the pandemic did not particularly affect the life of the Latgale Zoo – life is in full swing there: active scientific and organizational work is underway.

During the forced holidays, the zoo is improved, the living environment for animals is improved, and the feed kitchen is being repaired. The biggest changes have been made to the previously unused corner of the first floor, where the zone for aquatic organisms, that is, the inhabitants of the water element, is being equipped, due to which the exposition of the zoo will increase by a third. And soon the newlyweds otters will settle.

Observing all the measures of epidemiological safety, the zoo staff monitor the health and offspring of their pets. Some even have to be nursed at home – for example, tamarin monkeys.

A male otter, who has been living in the zoo for over a year, is now waiting for a girlfriend from sunny Spain. Their young family will settle on the first floor of the zoo, in the zone of aquatic organisms, where a separate reservoir is allocated for them. The transformation of this department has become possible thanks to funding from the Latvian Environmental Protection Fund.

Several years ago, the building of the Latgale Zoo was insulated as part of a city government project. The “pluses” of insulation are especially felt now, when the outside air temperature drops below -20 degrees. Inside, it is always possible to maintain a stable, comfortable and warm temperature of about +25 Celsius, which is beneficial for both animal health and heating costs.

Zoo employees are working hard to ensure that after the end of the Covid-19 pandemic, visiting the animal kingdom becomes a real journey into the heart of the wild. And the inhabitants of the zoo are already yearning for the attention of visitors and are preparing to show them themselves in all their glory.
