The expert explained why Hungary will not change its attitude towards Russia — UNIAN

Political scientist András Rats believes that Hungary’s dependence on Russia is becoming stronger and the room for maneuver is becoming smaller and smaller.

Russia’s war against Ukraine has not changed anything in Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s relations with Moscow.

Hungarian political scientist András Rats said that in terms of energy security, Hungary is very dependent on Russia, writes DW.

“Over the past eight years, Hungary has failed to diversify its sources of energy, and now this is having unpleasant consequences. The most important interest of Hungary is that Gazprom does not stop its supply. If this happened, the country would be threatened with economic disaster. Budapest now tries to avoid everything that, in his opinion, can annoy Russia,” the expert said.

The political scientist believes that Hungary’s dependence on Russia is becoming stronger and the room for maneuver is becoming smaller and smaller.

“Russia can blackmail Hungary through the supply of natural gas. And that is why Hungary will not change its attitude towards Russia in the near future,” Rats explained.

He also told whether Hungary is interested in the disintegration of Ukraine as a state in order to regain Transcarpathia.

“This is absolutely unrealistic and impossible. In military, diplomatic, political and economic terms, it would be a complete disaster for Hungary. As a member of the EU and NATO, the country would be completely isolated, not to mention that Ukraine is militarily much stronger than Hungary and would fight back. If Orbán makes vague hints about such a scenario in his speeches from time to time, it is primarily not about foreign policy, but about appealing to that part of local voters who are right-wing extremists,” the expert said.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban supports the policy of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Since the beginning of the war, he has publicly opposed sanctions against Russia and declared that Ukraine will not be able to defeat Russia.

The head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Hungary, Peter Szijarto, has repeatedly spoken out against Ukraine. Thus, on November 17, a Hungarian diplomat accused EU leaders of anti-Russian policy and called on them to resign.
