Cold weather is approaching and the winter diet of sheep must be balanced and of good quality. In winter, the sheep’s diet is based on meals composed primarily of quality canned foods. Of the canned nutrients, the most important role in the diet of sheep is played by quality grass hay and alfalfa hay. Hay should be of good quality, ie. mowed at the optimal stage of development and dried in optimal weather conditions in order to minimize nutrient losses.

Another type of canned food that plays an important role in feeding sheep in the winter is quality silage. The amount of silage in the meal when feeding sheep usually ranges from 2-3 kg. with 1.5 – 2 kilograms of quality hay. If you have quality hay, especially if it is quality hay of grass – legume mixtures, its amount can be reduced to only 0.5 kg per day and the share of corn silage increases to 4-5 kg per day.

Care should be taken to ensure conditions to prevent freezing of silage in winter conditions and NEVER give frozen, moldy silage to sheep, because such silage, especially in pregnant sheep, can lead to bloating, miscarriage and indigestion. Excluding hay from the meal is not recommended.

The amount of concentrate in the daily meal ranges from 150 – 250 gr. The diet of sheep during lactation in the winter must be uniform. Feeding is done three times a day on several occasions with smaller amounts of food. When feeding sheep in the winter, care must be taken about calcium intake, so if sheep are fed nutrients low in calcium, it is necessary to add 3-4 g. cattle chalk mixed with bran. When using root-tuber nutrients, it is necessary to take care that they are well cleaned from the ground and finely chopped.
