“In a democracy, tyrants grow up in the shadow of the euphemisms that the people, be it through negligence or ignorance, strive to tolerate.”
After the violent irruption that the supporters of the outgoing President Trump perpetrated a few days ago against the United States Congress, and I say violent irruption because there was no sign that it was even something similar to a coup d’état (they lacked, at least, organization and a very powerful armed support to prosper and be taken as such), the consequent reactions to such an extraordinary and symbolic event occurred. Sticking to our picky political space, the most paradoxical of these reactions occurred among politicians and doctrinaires on the left. When reading them with the thoughtfulness and disbelief they deserve, I could only wonder, why do people hate those who are like themselves deep down?
Hours after what happened, for example, Pablo Iglesias wrote on social networks, in a kind of advantageous synthesis, that “the modus operandi of the extreme right ”went through the use of“ blatant lies as a political weapon ”and the“ subversion of institutional mechanisms when they are not favorable ”. Faced with these statements, absurd for the fact that they come precisely from him, so fond of fostering discord and low passions, it seems compelled to ask himself why does Pablo Iglesias consider that lies and subversion are exclusive to the extreme right? We can still add, has Pablo Iglesias ever resorted to or encouraged the practice of these modus Who attributes and despises in his opponents? I am very afraid that the leader of Podemos has been hiding behind his tarnished metaphor of riding contradictions that has ended up becoming one himself. This would not in itself represent a problem if it did not drag after it so many people who, through blindness or will, believe in the truth of its principles and those of its party; a party that is increasingly yours as possession.
These political leaders and their parties subsist thanks to the beautiful excuses they make up and behind which they hide
It is not necessary to look far back to come face to face with actions and proclamations by Churches that fit perfectly with the anti-democratic and fascist proposals that he claims to reject so much. Recently, those days of October 2016 have been highlighted, as a paradigmatic example of that sick antidemocratic passion, in which Iglesias and his people did not accept the result of an election and called to surround the Congress to intimidate the parliamentarians for the Government that they instituted (since when can this action be considered a democratic action, when it is based on the rejection of the result of free elections?). Although that did not incur in a formal assault on Congress, it did not cease to be based on the same ideas of non-acceptance of the result of the ballot box, as can be read in the manifesto written for the occasion: «Before the coup of the mafia, democracy. No to the illegitimate investiture “or” In the end the coup of the regime has been consummated. It will be an illegitimate government of an illegitimate regime ”, were some of his proclamations. Don’t you appreciate the family resemblance with the dangerous tantrum of Trump and yours? Pablo Iglesias himself even said in Congress, “I owe myself to the honor of my country and of the citizens, not to the honor of this Chamber.” Whoever does not see the misery and discredit at the heart of this phrase and of whoever says it is because it does not suit them.
That day, around the Spanish Parliament, there was, of course, physical and verbal violence, insult and the throwing of objects at the deputies who thought contrary to the protesters: Iglesias and Garzón (do you remember when the latter, in April of 2017, put the suspicion on the Indra company and that it could have rigged the elections?), among many others today, feignedly scandalized by what happened in Washington, happily took a position on the side of these anti-democratic actions and proclamations, which for them were then , euphemistically, not only democratic but just: clearly they had the sole purpose of intimidating the deputies and lacked the spirit, honesty and democratic sense that they arrogate today. In that case, needless to say, they tolerated and encouraged that modus operandi, of course, because they considered it beneficial to fulfill their wishes and warm the atmosphere. In any case, it does not seem likely that a government born of such perspectives and people can develop qualities that favor the existence and journey of a democratic regime.
In democracy, tyrants grow little by little in the shadow of the euphemisms that the people, be it through indolence or ignorance, strive to tolerate
In the Popular Party and in Ciudadanos the habitual vices of political activity are present today, which are practical and insurmountable, unfortunately, in any State that maintains so much professional politician and so much bureaucracy. However, in Sánchez’s PSOE, as well as in Podemos and Vox, the most harmful vices for the correct development of life and the future of Spanish democracy are presented: they strive to maintain a war of spiritual order, while reality it is neglected and despised, like those of us who live in it. These political leaders and their parties subsist thanks to the beautiful excuses they make up and behind which they hide. They bait the hearts of their voters with them, never their heads, filling them with insincere and distorting inclinations. Thus, in democracy, tyrants grow little by little in the shadow of the euphemisms that the people, be it due to negligence or ignorance, strive to tolerate: Iglesias, Sánchez and Abascal have to lose their political influence so that Spain can be a a country where you can live in freedom and without fear.
