The women’s women’s fencing tournament took place today at the European Fencing Championships in Antalya, Turkey. Nelli Differt, Irina Embrich, Katrina Lehis and Erika Kirpu from Estonia participate, but none of them reached medal matches.
All four Estonians made it to the 1/16 finals, with Katrina Lehis winning the hardest of the 64 best. He was still 10:14 in the loss, but was finally able to win 15:14 in extra time, mediated Delphi.
Unfortunately, Lehis, Nelli Differt and Irina Embrich had to accept the loss. Kirpu was the only one to continue the competition in the quarterfinals, unfortunately he lost to Swatowska-Wenglarczyk at 11:15 and the individual competition of the Estonians is over.
All four Estonians made an excellent introduction to the competition, won their subgroup and definitely reached the top 64.
The 2018 European champion and last year’s Olympic bronzewoman Katrina Lehis and the debutant of the major competitions Nelli Differt both won five (out of six) and Erika Kirpu and Irina Embrich won four (out of five).
In the first round, Lehis was behind Alexandra Ehler (Germany) at 6:11 and 10:14, but reached the last minute at 14:14, making a tie five seconds before the end of normal time. And in overtime, Lehis also stabbed!
In the second round, Lehis lost to Pauline Brunner (Switzerland) in a dramatic 14:15. He was in the chase for most of the match, but reached 12:12 in the final third and then 14:14. Lehis also seemed to stab in the close fight, but the opponent showed the referee that his weapon was not working and after the inspection it turned out that this was the case. Lehis did not read the stabs, the match was continued and then Brunner was able to stab himself, mediated Postman.
Nelli Differt started in the first round with Katarina Kneževici (Serbia), in the second round she met Mara Navarria (Italy). Differt was quite far behind Navarria and could not save the match with the final break – result 12:15.
