The new purpose of the office is increasingly surfacing
Despite a willingness to work regularly at home even after the epidemic, workers continue to be strongly attached to the office. Research shows that the office provides a sense of community and belonging, while telecommuting has led to gaps in collaboration, leadership, and leadership competencies. JLL’s “human experience” report – which surveyed more than 2,000 office workers globally – found that 70% of office workers said the office environment was much more useful for working with teammates when complex issues had to be resolved, and better facilitate the handling of direct reports and liaison with management.

As work is now truly limitless – 66% of employees expect to be able to work from different locations even after the crisis – workers expect a new office experience that is safe, productive and seamless, meeting both their personal and professional needs. This requires employers to balance the dynamics of the physical and virtual workplace to meet the different and changing needs and work styles of employees.
The JLL study highlights four employee profiles that predict that the future of work will be radically different. A traditional office worker wants to work exclusively in the office; the free spirit wants to break free from the traditional office environment; the experience lover enjoys the company of people, social experiences; and for the wellness addict, work-life balance is a priority. These types of workers need to be central, as employers need to strive to create a truly employee-centered workplace that incorporates the different preferences of employees.
“Many employers are starting to accept that their company will never work the way it did before the crisis. Employers need to adapt their work area to the new ways of working introduced by the pandemic and rediscover how they can develop for and in parallel with the workforce, not against it, ”said Mary Bilbrey, JLL’s Director of Global Human Resources.

As hybrid work quickly becomes a status quo – 50% of the workforce wants to work both in the office and remotely – JLL also expects a significant change in flexible office space operation models.
