The end of the Zan Bill is a blow to Enrico Letta. And a taste of the race for the Quirinale

The end is known, as in the title of the novel by Geoffrey Holiday Hall, indeed it had been known for a long time. This does not mean that the political consequences will be less severe. Certainly the trap dropped on Wednesday on the Zan bill against homotransphobia, sunk by secret ballot for 23 votes (154 yes, 131 no) to the request for “non-passage to the examination of the articles” presented by Lega and Fratelli d’Italia , marks an era, a boundary, the unfolding of a horizon.

It is on issues like this, that is usually on the skin of those who are more fragile, that politics measures its strength: it happened among other things in 2015, six years ago, with the Renzi government and the tug-of-war on civil unions; it had also happened eight years earlier with the second Prodi government, where they tried in vain to approve the so-called Pacs, then Dico (lost forerunners of the CirinnĂ  law), in a battle that had marked the beginning of the end of that pachyderm majority.

It happens now, with the end of the Zan bill to mark the beginning of the battle for the Colle. And not only. Squeezed since the summer in the pincer between the two Mattei (Salvini and Renzi) who live a difficult phase for different reasons (respectively: the flop at the polls and the electoral inconsistency) and therefore have full interest in tuning in to each other, blessed in the last three days ago, acting like a werewolf, by the secretary of the Democratic Party Enrico Letta during the interview with Fabio Fazio so that one could then say “we defended him to the last” as in effect said after the senator dem Alessandro Alfieri, the measure against homotransphobia, with its trap-like fate, draws also the how of the next election of the President of the Republic, which will only come alive at the end of December.

A game where, as a few days ago in the Senate, neither of the two Mattei can be ignored: just as the Draghi government cannot and does not want to do. It is no coincidence that in June, on the occasion of the note from the Vatican Secretariat of State criticizing the Zan bill, the prime minister had spent words sufficiently cautious to please everyone: the left for the decisive affirmation about “the secular state”, the right for underlining the “respect for pluralism and cultural diversity”. A warm advice not to go to the fight, probably.

Instead it happened. And the way it went, it represents a nice stop for Enrico Letta’s ambitions and a strong blow to the majority Ursula longed for in these days transversely, starting with the blue minister of the Pa Renato Brunetta. It says clearly that, at the time X, the left will do the left, the right the right. Forza Italia included. And opens the showdown in the center-left: the one with the Renzian front that the electoral results had temporarily put aside.

Indeed, Matteo Renzi’s party is the main suspect in the count of hidden gravediggers: and from tomorrow it will be even more difficult for Enrico Letta to build a coalition that also includes living Italy.

The balance between the forces is therefore not as unambiguous as the one that came out of the last electoral round which saw the center-left winning by Ulivo 2.0 wanted by Letta (and Giuseppe Conte). It is not over: the secretary of the Democratic Party sees dangerously resurrect, in the background, the shadow of himself from the times of Palazzo Chigi. When as prime minister he said so many left-wing things, but he couldn’t bring home even one.
