So Roberts and Sarliv came up with a daring plan: to have employees set their own compensation. “We just told everyone that they could be paid whatever they wanted,” she says. “You can choose your schedule, salary, and even your job.”
But before sharing the plan with the team, they presented it to the accountant, who said it was “the worst idea in the world,” and told them not to.
However, Roberts and Sarliv did not listen to him and asked all team members to think for a few weeks on what conditions they would like to work at Present Perfect, and describe in detail what value the company will receive in return.
Notably, one of the employees asked not to raise salaries, but to ensure that his current schedule and the boundaries between work and personal life remain the same.
Another asked for an amount that Roberts said the company simply could not afford. So they discussed his bonuses, raised his salary, agreed on more flexible hours and additional vacation days.
The business implications were unexpected for the co-founders.
“The quality level has skyrocketed,” admits Roberts. We constantly hear that no one is going to work as hard as the founder, right? And I feel like I’m working with a bunch of founders. “
