The Elektrines bridge connecting Vilkpėda and Lazdyni will be reconstructed in Vilnius

Until now, it has only been used for engineering networks, after the reconstruction the bridge will be convenient for pedestrians and cyclists.

“This connection is important in implementing the transformation of Vilkpėdes – we aim for the former industrial district to be returned to the city, to become a full-fledged part of it, where life is boiling – citizens live, work and spend their leisure time. At the same time, this will give an impetus to organize the part of the city between Miškinii and Šiltnamių streets,” said Laura Kairienė, advisor to the chief city architect of the Vilnius City Municipality.

The bridge reconstruction project was prepared by the company “TEC Infrastructure” on the order of the Vilnius City Municipality. in 2021 after the examination of the bridge, it became clear that only ropes are suitable for operation. The reconstruction will aim to restore the original design of the bridge by leaving the cables, but the old metal structures due to corrosion will be replaced with new ones. Supports will also be distributed, and a wider overlay will be installed.

The roadway of the bridge will have bicycle and pedestrian paths. The reconstructed bridge and accesses will be adapted for people with individual needs. Reinforced concrete stairs with rest areas for pedestrians are planned to be installed on the side of Elektrinje Street near the bridge. On the Miškiniai street side, traffic from the bridge is diverted to the left and right sides with separate lanes. The bridge will be illuminated with energy-saving LED lights.

After the reconstruction of the bridge, residents of Vilkpėda and Naujamiestis will be able to comfortably reach Lazdynėlii and the nearby Bukčiai forest. And Miškinų st. and for the residents of Lazdynialei, this will be the shortest way to the city center and Vingios Park.

A construction permit has already been issued for the reconstruction of the bridge, and a tender for the selection of a contractor will be announced this year. It is planned that the reconstruction of the bridge could start next year, it will cost about 5 million. Eur.

The 184 m long suspension bridge was built more than half a century ago – in 1957. Due to low-quality construction works and deviations from the project, the bridge was not put into operation and served only as a support for engineering communications. It was not intended for pedestrians.
