Cox’s Bazar-1 MP Zafar Alam and Cox’s Bazar-3 MP Saimum Sarwar Kamal brought to the notice of the Railway Minister the issue of irregularities and corruption in the payment of compensation for land acquired for the construction of the railway.
The two MPs said, “There have been widespread allegations of massive irregularities in land acquisition in Cox’s Bazar district and in many cases the real owners of the land have not received compensation. Therefore, I demand the Hon’ble Minister to take necessary steps to ensure that the real owners of the land get compensation. ”
According to Bangladesh Railway sources, construction of 128 km railway line from Dohazari to Satkania, Lohagara, Chakaria, Ramu, Cox’s Bazar, Ukhia and Ghumdhum in Naikhyangchhari is underway. The cost of the project has been estimated at Tk 17,034 crore. Tk 2,350 crore has been given to the Chittagong and Cox’s Bazar district administrations to compensate the land owners. If implementation is not possible within the stipulated time, the project cost may increase.
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) is financing the project. Railways signed an agreement with two contractors in 2016 for the implementation of the project, but due to complications in land acquisition, the implementation of the project also started late.
