The Seimas rejected the proposal to apply a reduced value added tax (VAT) rate to electricity and gas until the middle of next year.

It was proposed, starting from October 15 and until June 1, 2022, inclusively, to apply a reduced VAT rate of 5% on electricity, transmission and distribution services and a mandatory purchase component instead of the current 21%.

The amendments also provided for the application of a 5% VAT rate to natural gas and its transportation and distribution services.
Nevertheless, the Saeima deputies did not support such an initiative.

But recently, the Ministry of Economy proposed to increase the amount of support by 10 euros for all groups of protected users, including large and low-income families, as compensation for the sharp rise in electricity prices.

To increase this support from the budget, an additional 17.5 million euros will be required per year.
